I give the brush applied paint a little time to dry on the edges, to leave a hard outline for the initial rust patches. Next I begin to remove (blot off) the paint with the makeup sponge – changing the face of the sponge regularly, to maximise the paint pickup. This allows a random paint application to all areas.
